York County Prison Release Paths
York County Prison is the county's adult correctional facility. It holds people awaiting trial and people sentenced by the York County Court of Common Pleas. Leaving its custody does not have one fixed meaning. Bail, release on recognizance, dismissal, credit for time served, completion of a county maximum, county parole, probation, or another court order may lead to the community. A transfer ends the York custody episode but does not mean freedom.
Destination controls the next check. A PADOC locator match at a state correctional institution points to continued state custody. A receiving county or federal agency should be checked in its own system. A detainer is an order or request that lets another authority take custody when York releases its hold. The prison entry should record an actual date and time, disposition, and receiving authority when those fields are maintained.
| York departure | Meaning and confirmation |
|---|---|
| Bail or court discharge | Use the prison entry with the York court docket or filed order. |
| County parole or probation | Confirm the release and the county supervision order separately. |
| PADOC transfer | Use the PADOC locator; this is continued custody, not community release. |
| Other authority | Request the receiving authority from the prison record, then check that agency. |
Confirm York Prison Release Records
York County does not publish a county-hosted roster or a rolling release list. The official prison page instead directs people to PA SAVIN, delivered through VINELink, for release notifications. PA SAVIN is useful for a named person's custody event. It is not a certified archive. A court docket can show the legal authority for release, yet it may not show the minute staff completed discharge.
The strongest result combines sources. Start with the official facility route, search PA SAVIN by name or identifier, and compare the agency and person details. Review both the Magisterial District Judge and Common Pleas dockets in the UJS Portal when the case moved between court levels. If state sentencing or transfer appears, check PADOC. For documentary proof, request York County Prison's existing admission and release record.
- Fix the person's full identity, last known facility, and approximate custody dates.
- Read the PA SAVIN status exactly and note whether it says release, transfer, or another event.
- Match the York docket and identify the bail, sentence, dismissal, or transfer authority.
- Search the receiving system if the record points to PADOC, BOP, ICE, or another county.
- Request the prison entry for the actual release time, type, and receiving authority maintained.
York Prison Records and Contact
The facility's official contact is the best place to resolve a current ambiguity. A Right-to-Know request should seek an existing record, not ask the county to answer a question or create a custom list. Identify the person by full name and date of birth or prison number, give the approximate admission date, and ask for an electronic copy of the booking/admission and release record. Specify actual release date and time, recorded disposition, and receiving authority as maintained.

Submit county prison-record requests through the York County Right-to-Know request route. Court orders use the Clerk of Courts route instead. York County need not make a new record, calculate a release window, or reorganize data. Exempt material may be redacted, while separable public portions can still be supplied.
For the site's full custody-specific sequence and record-field inventory, use the York County released inmate search. That sequence helps prevent a state transfer from being mislabeled as release.
York Prison Capacity and Role
The county reports a maximum of 2,400 prison beds and 276 Work Release Center beds. These are maximum capacities, not current headcounts or annual release figures. The prison houses pretrial detainees as well as people serving York County Common Pleas sentences. Those groups can leave under quite different authority, which is why a name-only search is not enough.
The official York County Prison page shows the county facility and its PA SAVIN direction.
The captured county page confirms that a specific-person notification route takes the place of a public York release feed.
York Prison Discharge Logistics
The prison's Ready for Release Checklist describes practical steps tied to discharge. It says a person should receive a three-day medication supply, the contents of the property box, and a check for remaining prison-account funds. Missing medication should be resolved at the front lobby before leaving the grounds. The checklist also identifies transit pickup in front of the prison. Because the checklist is dated, confirm current service and contact details before relying on them.
These steps help explain what happens after staff authorize departure, but none independently proves the legal release. A property box, account check, or ride may follow a discharge. The actual prison entry remains the source for its time and type. PA SAVIN can provide the event alert, while the docket supplies the court basis.
- Release
- Physical discharge from this custody, sometimes into the community.
- Transfer
- Movement directly into another authority's custody.
- Detainer
- A hold that may direct custody to another agency.
- Parole
- Conditional release while part of a sentence remains under supervision.
Note: Release supplies and transportation facts should never be used as substitutes for the prison's actual release entry.
York Prison ICE History
York County Prison had a long immigration-detention role, but official Prison Board material records the end of the ICE rental agreement on August 12, 2021. That date matters. An old York immigration record does not show that the prison is now an ICE detention site, and current immigration custody should not be searched as though York still holds the person.
A historical discharge to an immigration detainer was a transfer, not proof of community release. For a current immigration matter, use ICE's Online Detainee Locator or DHS VINE and follow the responsible agency's channel. A missing locator result can be inconclusive because of system coverage and update limits. Keep immigration status claims out of a York prison release conclusion unless the responsible authority supplies them.
York Prison History and Records
The county's archived history says the current prison opened in 1979 with capacity for 210 people. Expansion raised the historic figure to 1,200 in 1993 and 1,650 in 1999, with later growth to 2,300. A minimum-security and work-release dorm followed in 2006. Those dated figures describe the site's development. They should not replace the present maximums or be presented as current population.
That history also helps distinguish the main adult prison from its work-release component. A resident's authorized departure for work is not a final discharge from the sentence. Similarly, a move from the main prison to another unit is not release into the community. Each event must be read in the context of the prison record, court order, and receiving placement.
York County Prison records are strongest when they identify the custody episode by booking number, admission dates, and the release or transfer entry. A photograph or old docket may help identify the episode, but neither is a current custody result. Confirm facts with the agency that created them.
York Prison Court Evidence
York's court trail can begin with a Magisterial District Judge case and continue in Common Pleas. The MDJ docket may show preliminary arraignment, bail, and whether charges were dismissed or held for court. If a case is held, the Common Pleas docket can show disposition, sentence, credit for time served, probation, or a state commitment. Search both levels and match their docket details to the prison episode.
A favorable court entry still does not prove the exact jail-door time. Another docket or detainer can affect discharge, and staff must complete the custody process. Obtain the filed order from the Clerk when its terms matter, then pair it with the York County Prison release entry. If the sentence directs state custody, a PADOC match is continued confinement even though the person has left Concord Road.
Records can also become less visible after expungement or limited access. Absence from a public docket does not prove that custody never occurred. Ask the proper record custodian what remains accessible and do not treat an old screen capture as more authoritative than the office's current response.
Record the lookup date and the source's exact status language. That small step makes later verification far clearer.
